Plans for the Future
Doors Are Opening
The Shire recently was awarded a $10,000 farmer/rancher grant from the Healthy Bourbon County Action Team and the Patterson Family Foundation. This is the biggest blessing to our farm and we are so excited for the projects to come.
We want to take our knowledge and pass it on to our community. This will help build up the food system in Bourbon County, educate the community on how to live and eat healthier on a budget, and how to transition to a homestead lifestyle in a practical way. We are wanting to help the community get back to the roots of growing their own food and how rewarding it is to keep doing it.
2023 Plans
Starting out the year, we will increase our flock as well as add ducks and turkeys. This will allow us to supply the community and our local Pizza Republic eggs. Pizza Republic will be using our eggs for their new breakfast pizza’s!
The Shire will start our bee aviary journey at the end of March! We have no experience with keeping bees let alone harvesting honey, however we are very deep researchers before taking on new projects. The goal is to keep them alive through winter and be able to get our first honey harvest in Fall of 2024.
I had such a great learning experience with our garden last year, so I’m excited that we are going to double our growing area this year! We will continue to supply Pizza Republic with our Homemade Bread & Butter Pickles (available for purchase in our online shop!) as well as some herbs. Year after year we will add more and more products and produce that will be sold in Pizza Republic’s menu.
Last but not least, we are going to be breeding our Jersey cows by the end of May, which will make us ready for starting our milking journey in March of 2024.
As always, stay tuned for our journey to come!
Blessings,
-Bradie
